It is time, after eight years, to increase the price of Free Movement membership. The changes will take effect on 1 April 2022.

If you are not currently an annual member but have been thinking about it, now would be a good time to sign up in order to secure a year of membership at the old rates.

I had intended to increase pricing during 2021 and said so in my annual review at the end of 2020, but held off because of the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. The basic price of individual annual membership was fixed in 2014 and has not gone up since then. What has gone up is the number of courses we offer, the frequency and length of blog posts, the number of paid contributors, the number of staff behind the scenes and the cost of hosting and operating the website. It was just me in 2014 but there are four of us now: CJ is now the editor, Rachel is deputy editor for training and Faye handles customer queries. We’ve also just made an expensive move to a dedicated server in order to speed things up and eliminate the server time-outs that some users have occasionally been experiencing.

Existing courses are going through major updates, we’ve just launched an Introduction to Refugee Law course and there are new courses on the way, including one for the Nationality and Borders Bill which I am in the process of editing now.

In the style of Home Office fee increase tables, this is what the new pricing will look like (before VAT):

MembershipOld priceNew price% change
Monthly£20£2210%
Annual£200£22010%
Small group (10)£600£70020%
Medium group (20)£1000£120020%
Large group (50)£2000£250025%

These prices will apply to new members signing up on or after 1 April 2022 and also for existing members renewing their membership on or after 1 April 2022.

I’m holding down the price increase for individuals. The price per user for groups will remain, I hope, a really good deal for organisations: just £70 each for a small group, £60 each for a medium group and £50 each for a large group. We will also be increasing the cost for the custom plans we offer to very large organisations.

If you have a question about pricing, drop me an email at editor@freemovement.org.uk. The same goes for any feedback on the courses or website content.
