The government has announced a review of the civil legal aid market with the aim of supporting long-term sustainability and efficiency. The review will also consider taxpayers’ value for money in any future policy options, as well as how people access the support they need.

The review will come in the form of an external economic analysis, by a third party who will be appointed in the coming weeks. It will encompass all of the civil legal aid market, which includes immigration.

The Justice Minister, Lord Bellamy, said:

“This comprehensive review will give us a wealth of evidence on the civil legal aid systems, how services are provided, and of the issues facing the market.

Identifying how we can make provisions work best for everyone will help ensure we are building a more efficient and effective system to deliver sustainable legal aid support well into the future.”

Findings are due to be published in 2024. Whilst a comprehensive review is important, uncertainty remains across the sector about how much of the legal aid system will be left by the time any reforms are implemented as a result of the report.
