Last week I did a short interview on the Calais crisis with Newshour on the World Service. It is always odd listening to oneself and I only just now forced myself to do it. I didn’t do too badly, I think. I try to emphasise the UK’s limited contribution to taking refugees in comparison to other countries, the fact the people in Calais are mainly refugees, that they want to reach safety and that the structure of the UK labour market does attract migrants. I didn’t do so well on the last point, only mentioning zero hour contracts when I could have gone on about lack of unionisation, low wages and low skilled jobs.
Listen here. I’m from 5.30 min into the item, but the build up from the start of the item and the prior interview with Karim are well worth listening to.
