The Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens (PRCBC) is seeking to recruit a self- motivating and committed junior solicitor to assist Solange Valdez-Symonds, PRCBC’s supervising solicitor and CEO, who is currently PRCBC’s sole employee. The post will be based at our offices in Hammersmith, London.
PRCBC is a small charity advising, assisting, and representing children and young people with their citizenship rights; undertaking strategic litigation and policy advocacy to remove legal and practical barriers to citizenship; and providing information and training to the public and professionals to increase knowledge of citizenship rights and capacity to secure these.
Since it was founded in 2012, PRCBC has worked to enable numerous judicial review claims, challenging historic injustices and other aspects of Home Office policy and practice in relation to young people’s citizenship rights under the British Nationality Act 1981. Over time it has achieved significant changes in the law; in 2022 its litigation resulted in the Home Office being compelled to consider children’s best interests and to issue policy guidance on affordability of registration fees, including a fee exemption for looked after children and the possibility of fee waivers for others.
The work of the junior solicitor will be to advise and assist young people on their complex British citizenship applications; assist the supervising solicitor as necessary; to develop their own caseload under the supervision of the supervising solicitor and to support all other aspects of PRCBC’s work. Please see job description and person specification for more information.
The position is full-time, and funding has been secured for three years. It is for 4 or 5 days per week (depending on personal circumstances). Hours will include one Saturday a month and out of hours work at times. A normal working day is 7 hours, with core hours from 10:00am to 5:30pm. The position is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. We would wish the successful candidate to start as soon as possible and ideally no later than November 2022.
Salary: £35-37k per annum depending on PQE
Closing date for applications: 5pm on Thursday 13th October 2022
Interviews: Week commencing Monday 17th October 2022
(The first interview will be about an hour and half at our office in Hammersmith. This will include a practical test)
PRCBC is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications from all who believe they fit the essential requirements of the post.
