Webinar replay: Demystifying section 4L of the British Nationality Act 1981

This webinar is designed for legal practitioners and caseworkers who want to deepen their understanding of section 4L of the British Nationality Act 1981.

Date of Recording: 11 June 2025
Length: 1 hour

About this webinar

Section 4L of the British Nationality Act 1981 was introduced by the Nationality and Borders Act 2022. It offers a route to British citizenship for adults who would have been, or could have become, British citizens if not for historical legislative unfairness, an act or omission of a public authority, or exceptional circumstances.

In this webinar we explored the practical application of section 4L by considering examples of scenarios of when section 4L may apply, including what might constitute as ‘exceptional circumstances’. We discussed the Home Office guidance and examined the challenges that have been arising with these cases.

The session was led by Diana Baxter who has successfully submitted a number of applications for British citizenship made under this provision. She will be sharing her top tips for preparing applications and best practices when advising clients.

By the end of the session, you’ll feel confident to assess eligibility and prepare a strong application.
