About us
Edgewater Legal is an OISC-regulated organisation which provides advice to clients in all aspects of the UK immigration system. Whilst we maintain an office in Victoria, the vast majority of our clients now prefer to engage us remotely, and this is therefore how we provide most of our advice.
With the decline of legal aid, the long-term aim of the practice is to develop a cross-subsidy model, providing services to clients who can afford to pay in order to fund free or reduced-fee services for those who can’t. This model will require caseworkers who are as comfortable advising tech company founders in the City as they are taking instructions from clients in the cells at HMP Wandsworth.
We are committed to providing an exceptional service to all clients, whatever their means.
About the role
We are looking to hire a paralegal for 20 hours a week. This is a fully remote role. Your day to day tasks are likely to include:
- Assisting with legal research and preparation of bundles in appeals before the tribunal
- Drafting blog posts and content for our website and social media
- Assisting with client onboarding process, including setting up files, preparation of draft Terms of Engagement and Client Care Letters
- Completing online application forms based on written client instructions
- Uploading documents to the UKVI/Sopra Steria website and booking biometric appointments
- Considering client queries and drafting responses for review by fee earners
- Assisting efforts to improve internal and external firm processes
The role is not a caseworker role, and would not be client facing. However, there is definitely scope for progression into a caseworker role for the right candidate and who is looking to develop their career in that direction.
About you
Ideally the candidate will be a graduate, although we are open to applications from school-leavers who are intending to study at undergraduate level, or who are looking for work whilst they study at undergraduate level or law school.
An intention to study law and/or become a lawyer is not a requirement, but you should have an interest in UK immigration and asylum policy and/or legal issues.
You must have immaculate written English. Previous experience writing articles or blog style content would be a bonus. If applicable, feel free to refer us to writing samples in your application.
As someone who is working remotely, you must be highly organised and proactive in your approach. You will be able to prioritise and work under pressure, and be quick to learn.
What you can expect
- £25,000 PA FTE (the pro-rata for 50% hours will be £12,500 PA)
- Daily 1-2-1 supervision and guidance from a leading practitioner
- 100% remote position
- Flexible working hours
- £250 annual training budget
- Supportive working environment
If you would like to be considered for this role then please send a CV and covering letter explaining why you think you would be suitable to nicknason@edgewaterlegal.com by Friday 16 September 2022.
