We are looking to recruit more specialist freelance contributors to Free Movement. If you can write fluently, you are interested in being read by a wide audience and you are fascinated by immigration law and practice then have a think about joining our small team of contributors. Free Movement is a platform now read by over 1.3 million unique visitors a year and with a mailing list of over 28,000.

We are particularly keen on hearing from legal practitioners in business and student immigration, as well as those keen to write up new cases. We are looking for people who can help with quick reaction legal analysis of case law and rule changes and who is capable of seeing the wider impacts of changes to immigration law. There will also be opportunities to write about developments and themes in immigration law, policy and practice.

We welcome interest from experienced immigration lawyers and we can help with structure, editing and so on.

A successful applicant would (in no particular order):

  • Be able to write in accordance with the Free Movement contributor guidelines
  • Be in a position to respond quickly to new developments, meeting deadlines of between 4 and 48 hours
  • Be able to write fluently, stylishly and concisely in English
  • Be able to analyse, understand and explain complex legal concepts in simple, plain language
  • Be legally trained
  • Have experience in UK immigration law and practice
  • Be familiar with key sources of information on immigration law
  • Be able to use the Free Movement Slack and respond to messages there
  • Be highly computer literate and have experience of or easily be able to learn how to use WordPress software

Work will be undertaken remotely and on a non-employed basis. A contributor need not be constantly available, but should be able to take work on consistently.

Fees payable for the work are negotiable but will typically be £100 for a “normal” article of around 800 to 1000 words.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on 22 November 2023 but we’ll be looking at applications and contacting suitable applicants as they come in. We will not necessarily be able to respond to all applicants.
