There have been three new immigration judges appointed to the First-tier Tribunal since we last covered judicial appointments.

London

• Declan O’Callaghan, 46, barrister. The well-regarded practitioner announced his retirement from Landmark Chambers in January to the confusion of some colleagues, for whom the mystery is now solved. Involved in immigration cases such as Sala, Tesfay and Negassi, to take only recent examples, but has also ranged across other public law areas and as far afield as Uganda and Malawi on death penalty work. AIRE Centre director Matt Evans salutes him as a “cerebral thinker, 100% committed to pro bono representation and a thoroughly nice person to boot”.
• Fiona Beach, 46, barrister. Practised out of Stour Chambers in Canterbury, where a now-wiped chambers profile noted her expertise in family work — particularly cases involving children — as well as immigration. Once on the board of Asylum Aid and a fee-paid immigration judge since 2006.

Glasgow

• Stuart Buchanan, 55, advocate. Practised in civil law, in which he lectured before being called to the Scottish bar, at the Arnot Manderson stables but has experience as a fee-paid judge going back to 2002. Appeared before the Supreme Court in family cases NJDB v JEG [2012] UKSC 21 and McGraddie v McGraddie [2015] UKSC 1.

Retirements

• Mark Reed, 60, from the First-tier Tribunal on 22 March.
• Andrew Jordan, 68, from the Upper Tribunal on 18 April.
