Campaigners are marking Saturday 17 February as a celebration of migrants and migration in the UK.

One Day Without Us is organising various events and rallies around the country, but latte-loving metropolitans like me are urged to gather in Parliament Square that afternoon (here’s the Facebook event). The organisers say:

At 1.30pm on 17th February we will be holding a banner rally in Westminster, where organisations will bring their banners along with placards showing their own specific messages related to the campaign (a great opportunity to get creative!). This will be followed by a banner drop on Westminster Bridge, which will read “Migrants Welcome Here”. We’re inviting press to cover the event, and members of the One Day Without Us team are also in the process of reaching out to specific MPs who have supported the campaign, as well as the Mayor of London.

A similar “day of action” was organised last year and received considerable media coverage. The One Day Without Us campaign is supported by a range of groups, including Liberty, Migrants’ Rights Network and The 3 Million.
