Conservative MP Andrew Mitchell calls indefinite immigration detention “a wrong that stains our democracy“. But the immigration minister insists that it doesn’t exist.

Witness the following exchange between the minister, Brandon Lewis, and the chair of the Home Affairs Committee on 21 November:

Brandon Lewis: We don’t have indefinite detention.

Yvette Cooper: You don’t have a limit on detention.

Brandon Lewis: No, but there is no indefinite detention either.

Only on Planet Home Office is detention for an indefinite period not considered indefinite detention.

At the time, Colin promised to send the minister a copy of the dictionary for Christmas to help him with the meaning of the word “indefinite”. So we did – just in time for last post.

It’s not exactly a visit by three spirits during the night, so an overnight conversion to the cause of time limits on detention is probably too much to hope for. On with the campaign in 2018.
